SOLITUDE
Solitude is something I am well used to, but at the same time it is something that sometimes makes me difficult. I have had experience with solitude since childhood, I got used to it and I draw from it both many positive feelings and often melancholic or even depressive states. In the fall of 2022, I began to be more aware of the feeling of loneliness, and especially the desire to try to process it in painting. In the paintings, I decided to capture a lonely female figure, which in the given environment is supposed to represent my feelings of loneliness, she is an embodiment of solitude, but at the same time it is not me and it does not capture any specific event or my memory. I chose the environment based on where I think loneliness can affect a person the most. Loneliness on vacation – on a beach by a sea, then a bathroom and bedroom environment at night. When looking for a suitable range of colours for processing the theme, I chose a more monochromatic colour scheme with main colours – pink and black. I perceive pink as a stereotypically feminine/girlish colour associated with tenderness, sometimes perhaps obscurity, but mainly with positive feelings and cheerfulness. On the other hand, I think that it can also be perceived negatively, perhaps even depressingly. Anyway, there is a certain contrast of tenderness and hardness to the darkness of the black colour that I find impressive. From the previous paintings, this series, in terms of approach to painting, also changed by expanding my concept of "sketch". For me, the preparatory drawings became, among other things, 3D models of figures placed in a fictitious environment. I used these models to understand spatial properties and the effects of light and shadows. The 3D environment and the ability to position the figures also helped me in my quest to find depressing and closed poses. The resulting "3D sketch" then served as a free model for painting. From the very beginning, paintings by Edward Munch named "Melancholia" accompanied me in my mind. I expect my paintings to evoke emotions in the viewer - more specifically, emotions associated with loneliness.
